29/06/01 New IT functionality makes it easier for Maersk Logistics' customers to follow their shipments |
Maersk Logistics today announced the launch of yet another functionality to its Web-based IT system M*PowerT. The new functionality - called Notification - will notify clients of operational changes to their shipments through the entire supply chain.
"Notification" is the latest addition to the Maersk Logistics M*PowerT Suite of IT tools, which are designed to deliver a wide range of information services to customers. Since fast access to timely and accurate information is an important parameter in today's competitive market, Maersk Logistics has invested considerable resources in building IT systems that can provide customers with access to up-to-date information that facilitates supply chain management and improves the decision-making process.
Management by Exception
The launch of Notification also demonstrates Maersk Logistics' commitment to develop the concept of 'Management by Exception' in the field of integrated logistics solutions. By 'Management by Exception', Maersk Logistics means the ability to keep customers informed of last minute changes in schedules and order deliveries. To achieve this goal, Notification provides active exception reporting, for example, the system will send customers notifications when delivery dates for orders are changed - and it will alert customers of changes or updates down to the level of each individual SKU (stock keeping unit) of each order.
Subsequent releases of Notification will go beyond order and container information. Notification of activities in the entire supply chain will be developed as experience is gained from the first release - with advanced options for users to define their own notification rules.
Notification introduces the information push approach to M*PowerT because it will allow users to choose to have notification messages sent to their respective email addresses. Users will also have various options such as having a message sent containing a simple generic notice of change, a link to the relevant part of M*PowerT, or a message containing both a link and the full notification data.

27/06/01 STANDARD AUDIT PROGRAM WILL IMPROVE SAFETY AND SAVE COST IN THE AIRLINE INDUSTRY - I.A.T.A. INTENDS TO INTRODUCE A SET OF INTERNATIONAL STANDARD AUDITS. |
Following on the recent successful introduction of Operational Quality Standard (OQS) audits, strengthening requirements for new member applicants, the International Air Transport Association - IATA - intends to introduce a set of International Standard Audits and offer a related range of value-added audit and audit tracking services.
The airline industry is subject to an ever-increasing proliferation of inspections, reviews and audits which often overlap, both in intent and content. World-wide, over 70,000 audits a year are performed, costing in excess of USD 3 billion. Underlying this large cost is a wide variability in both operating and audit standards and their application. Standardization and harmonization will enhance air transport safety world-wide.
IATA Director General Pierre J. Jeanniot said, "As an independent international body with global influence, credibility and access to world-wide technical resources, IATA is well positioned to develop and lead the implementation of harmonized and cost-effective industry-wide operating and audit standards."
This program will be focussing initially on the IATA Operational Safety Audit (IOSA) which will cover flight operations, safety management, engineering, maintenance, ground operations, cargo, dangerous goods, and related training in these areas.
The implementation of the IATA program will rationalize global audit efforts and bring significant performance improvements and cost savings to the airline industry while ensuring that the competence, quality and robustness of an airline to achieve safety objectives and manage related risks is properly assessed and accredited.
26/06/01 AIRBUS MORE THAN DOUBLES 2001 SALES AT THE PARIS LE BOURGET AIR SHOW, ANNOUNCING 175 ORDERS WORTH US$14 BILLION |
Airbus signed deals with five customers at Le Bourget this week for a total of 175 aircraft worth US$14 billion. Of these 155 were firm sales.
Announcements included the consolidation of two major customers' earlier commitments for the all-new A380 superjumbo, with Air France and ILFC placing firm orders for 10 A380s respectively. This year's show also witnessed the largest Airbus order ever placed by a single customer in terms of value, with the sale of 111 Airbus aircraft in total, worth US$8.7 billion.
The first major order placed at this year's show came with the signature by JetBlue Airways of a firm contract for an additional 30 A320s, bringing the New York start-up carrier's total firm orders for the type to 63. Airbus then gained a new customer with Royal Air Maroc's firm order for four A321s. This was followed by an order from Air France for 10 A380-800s, in confirmation of an earlier commitment.
ILFC, the world's largest leasing company, and the first North American customer for the A380, doubled its original commitment for the type, firmly ordering five A380-800s and five A380-800F freighter versions. ILFC also firmly ordered 21 A330-200s and 80 A320 Family single-aisle aircraft. This milestone deal, valued at US$8.7 billion, is the largest order in value terms ever placed for Airbus aircraft by a single customer.
Brazilian airline TAM - Linhas Aéreas also confirmed its intention to acquire 20 A318 aircraft, the latest member of Airbus' highly popular A320 Family of single-aisles.
"We are delighted with the results of this air show," said Noël Forgeard, Chief Executive Officer of Airbus, "and we are honoured that, despite a generally less bullish market, airlines and leasing companies - whose success depends on accurate market trend predictions - continue to turn to Airbus' modern and comprehensive product line for the best aircraft to meet their needs."
With well over 4,400 orders booked to date from some 180 customers worldwide, Airbus consistently captures about half of the market for commercial aircraft seating more than 100 passengers. Headquartered in Toulouse, France Airbus is an EADS joint company with BAE SYSTEMS.
THE SOLUTION FOR 21 ST CENTURY MEGAPORTS
Today, ports are gearing up to meet the challenge of 10,000 TEU to 12,000 TEU container vessels. The key question is how to handle this huge number of containers efficiently to and from the ship's side.
Virtually all of the major ocean carriers today are building post-Panamax container ships of 5,000 to 6,000 TEU, and some have taken things even further with ships of 6,000 to 7,000 TEU. Drawing board designs show ships of 8,000 TEU to 12,000 TEU and, based on information supplied by the major carriers, many ports are already equipping themselves with high-speed gantry cranes capable of working ships carrying containers 22-across on deck.
This new trend has raised the question of crane productivity and, in particular, the question of how to move large numbers of containers quickly to and from the ship's side. After all, there is no point in building giant ships designed to be serviced by four or more fast ship-to-shorecranes if the container flows between the import/export stacks and the ship are not going to match the ship-to-shore capabilities.
To meet this challenge, Kalmar has a revolutionary solution: a low- height shuttle carrier. Designed primarily to convey containers between the ship's side and container stacks served by rubber-tyred gantry cranes (RTGs) or rail-mounted gantry cranes (RMGs), this machine is also able to stack containers two high and therefore can also be used for loading and unloading road trucks.
The shuttle carrier is a tempting alternative for terminals that are looking for more efficient ways to handle container transport between the stacks and the quay cranes, and still maintain high density stacking by RTG or RMG yard cranes.
Combining the best features:
Most medium-sized and large ports today operate using RMG/RTG or straddle carriersystems. Now there is demand for a system that combines the best features of these two dominant systems: the large storage capacity of yard cranes with the flexibility and speed of the straddle carrier system.
While RTG and RMG cranes take care of the storage area, fast container transport between the stacks, quay and interchange area is handled by shuttle carriers.
Superior alternative
With its ability to lift, carry and transport containers, it is a far superior alternative to other methods of transporting boxes between the quay and high density stacking areas.
Using the shuttle carrier, there are natural buffer zones both at the end or alongside the stacks and under the ship-to-shore cranes. Since it never needs to wait for the cranes, either on the quay or at the stacks, the shuttle carrier is able to provide the required operational speed and complete a high number of cycles per hour between ship and stack.
The Shuttle Carrier, which has been developed in close co-operation with the leading Belgian stevedoring company, Hessenatie, is now being actively marketed by Kalmar to other ports and terminal operators that are looking to build or upgrade their facilities.
The pioneering development of this revolutionary shuttle carrier concept has been carried out in close cooperation with Hessenatie NV, the Antwerp stevedoring company.
Hessenatie is pioneering the development of a completely new container handling system for use at its planned MSC-Hessenatie automated terminal on the left bank of the River Scheldt in Antwerp. The system is based on a new concept, the centrepiece of which is the Shuttle Carrier. The aim is to achieve extremely high levels of productivity by making ship-to-shore crane cycle times independent of the availability of transfer vehicles.
Hessenatie has selected the new concept of OBCs (overhead bridge cranes) for its import and export stacks and needed a fast method of transferring containers between the ship and the stacks. The traditional solution would have been terminal tractors but Hessenatie felt that these were inefficient for the style of operation it envisaged. In trying to achieve the required handling rates, it anticipated considerable quayside congestion or crane delays. The new Shuttle Carrier developed by Kalmar offers the perfect solution for Hessenatie's problem.
Double-buffering
The key to the concept is double buffering. The ship-to-shore cranes are able to place boxes directly onto the quay and do not have to wait for the Shuttle Carriers to arrive. Consequently the crane drivers can concentrate on trying to achieve maximum cycle times, maintaining a buffer of containers on the quayside.
Similarly, the stacking cranes work to and from buffer stacks and in theory, there should be no crane waiting time.
Successful testing
Hessenatie has been testing the concept at its terminal in the Delwaide Dock. During the test period, the Shuttle Carrier has been transporting and stacking containers with excellent reliability and has achieved impressive cycle times.
The Kalmar Shuttle Carrier can be described as a smaller, simpler version of Kalmar's proven straddle carrier design.Since it is only able to stack two-high, its construction is lightweight, resulting in higher acceleration, braking and running speeds.A lower centre of gravity also enables it to achieve higher cornering speeds safely, making it easy for the operator to manoeuvre. RMGs and RTGs Although the Hessenatie application involves overhead bridge cranes, Kalmar pointsoutthatthe Shuttle Carrier is also able to work between the quay and stack areas served by either RMGs or RTGs (rubber-tyred gantry cranes).

06/06/01 Global Freight Exchange (GF-X) announced the launch of its "permanent booking" functionality and ramps-up global operations |
Global Freight Exchange (GF-X), http://www.gf-x.com the internet-based airfreight exchange for carriers and forwarders, announced the launch of its "permanent booking" functionality.
In addition to enhancing functionality, GF-X has continued to grow its global operations with the launch of live transactions in Narita, Dallas and Houston over the last month.
GF-X launched its permanent booking functionality on schedule with its global client participants. This functionality provides participating forwarders with the ability to place automated bookings against pre-agreed permanent booking capacity on-line. This is currently handled by faxes and phone calls between multiple carriers and multiple forwarders.
Over the next months, GF-X will be working with participants to manage the implementation of this release and drive the change necessary to enable participants to realise the considerable benefits that it offers.
In addition to this introduction of new functionality, GF-X has been expanding its global operations, launching live transactions in Narita, Dallas and Houston over the last month. These three additions expand key existing operations in the Americas, Asia and Europe, including: Amsterdam, Brussels, Chicago, Dubai, Frankfurt (and many other key German origins), Hong Kong, London, Los Angeles, New York and Zurich.
"GF-X has successfully proved that a B2B marketplace like GF-X can be built and integrated with carrier systems, that it can work and that it is possible to gain commitment to its growth. We will continue to work with our clients and invest to expand the network on GF-X and broaden the functionality," said Todd Morgan, Co-CEO of GF-X.
"The new permanent booking functionality will drive real benefits for forwarders and carriers by eliminating the present faxes and phone calls between carriers and forwarders and ensuring accurate data sharing and alerts," commented Roland Bischoff, Global Airfreight Director, Kuehne and Nagel.
The GF-X system has been "live" and operational since October 2000. GF-X has recently announced that EGL (Eagle Global Logistics) and Geologistics Corporation joined the internet-based airfreight marketplace. EGL and Geologistics Corporation have has joined other carriers and forwarders who are already transacting on the GF-X platform, including: American Airlines Cargo, British Airways World Cargo, Cargolux Airlines, Continental Airlines Cargo, Danzas AEI, DHL Aviation NV, Emirates SkyCargo, Exel, Kuehne & Nagel, Lufthansa, Panalpina, Schenker, Swisscargo, UTi and Yusen Air and Sea Service.
Established in November 1998, GF-X has raised over $85m of capital to-date. Its equity holders include: American Airlines, British Airways, Consolidated Press Holdings (CPH), Deustche Post World Net, Lufthansa Commercial Holding, Morgan Stanley Dean Witter (MSDW), Panalpina World Transport (Holdings), and SAirLogistics.
The new unit will include the Fritz Companies, Inc.; seven brokerage and forwarding operations acquired over the past 18 months, plus UPS's existing freight forwarding interests.
This division, with net revenues exceeding $750 million, combines Fritz's worldwide reach with additional, concentrated expertise and capabilities inside the United States. It will be headed by David Abney, a 27-year UPS veteran and former president of SonicAir, which is now part of UPS Logistics Group. The new business unit is not expected to have a material impact on UPS's earnings this year.
UPS agreed in January to acquire the Fritz Companies, a leading freight forwarding, customs brokerage and logistics concern headquartered in San Francisco.
The acquisition of Fritz Companies was structured as a tax-free merger in which Fritz became a separate and wholly owned subsidiary of UPS. Each share of Fritz common stock will be exchanged for 0.200 shares of UPS Class B common stock, for a total issuance of approximately 7.4 million shares of UPS Class B common stock. The transaction will be accounted for as a purchase and is valued at approximately $437 million.
"Long before the purchase of Fritz, UPS developed a strategic plan that called for a dramatic expansion of the company's ability to serve customers shipping not only packages, but also large items and heavy freight across international borders," said Abney. "That plan also called for the company to offer full service customs clearance services to shippers of all goods, not just those shipping small packages."
The acquisitions include:
- H.A. & J.L. Wood, Inc. of Pembina, N.D.
- Border Brokerage Co. of Blaine, Wash.
- Fulfillment Systems International (FSI) of Buffalo, N.Y.
- Trans-Border Customs Service (TCS) of Champlain, N.Y.
- W.Y. Moberly Inc. of Sweetgrass, Mont.
- Miles Group, Inc. of El Paso, Texas
- William F. Joffroy, Inc. of Nogales, Ariz.
The acquisitions were all cash transactions and terms were not disclosed.
"Today, the freight forwarding and customs brokerage industries are highly fragmented, both geographically and in the way services are provided to customers," said Abney
UPS is the world's largest express carrier and largest package delivery company and a leading global provider of specialized transportation and logistics services, serving more than 200 countries and territories.
