31/05/02 CP Ships to Acquire Italia Di Navigazione

CP Ships Limited has reached agreement with d'Amico Società di Navigazione S.p.A. to acquire all issued and outstanding shares of Italian container shipping company Italia di Navigazione for US$ 40 million in cash.

The transaction, which is subject to regulatory approval and certain other closing conditions, is expected to close in the third quarter. Italia operates its principal container services between the Mediterranean, West Coast North America and Central and South America. It carried about 180,000 teus in 2001.

Formerly owned by the Italian government, Italia was privatized when acquired by d'Amico in 1998. Italia will remain headquartered in Genoa, Italy, where CP Ships already has a substantial presence.

"The purchase of Italia is the continuation of a key element of CP Ships' overall strategy of making acquisitions to strengthen our regional position, create new opportunities for growth and build trade lane economies of scale, " said CP Ships' CEO Ray Miles.

"It has been a decision that we have made to guarantee the future of the company," said Cesare d'Amico. "Italia has been strengthened and is now ready for the consolidation process in the container trades. It will become part of a group well established in the American market and will be able to achieve greater economies of scale. The brand will be maintained, as well as the obligations towards the personnel." He added "d'Amico can now concentrate on its growing bulk and product carrier shipping activities in which it is investing heavily.

It will also focus on expanding its Intra-Mediterranean feeder services and on entry into the short-sea trades."

The acquisition includes:

· Italia brand and logo

· Services in four container shipping trade lanes:

- Mediterranean-West Coast North America

- Mediterranean-Central and South America

- West Coast North America-West Coast Central and South America

- Intra-Central and South America

Including the former d'Amico container services already merged with Italia

· Charter of 11 containerships with capacity between 1000 and 2500 teu

· Mainly leased container fleet of about 40,000 teu

· Genoa headquarters and staff, including employment guarantees given by d'Amico to the Italian government

· Owned agency operations in Italy, Spain, Canada and Venezuela

31/05/02 CARGO 2000, the IATA Interest Group working for the implementation of a new quality management system for the worldwide air cargo industry, elects new Chairman.

Roger Gibson, Vice President Cargo of United Airlines, has been elected as the new Chairman of Cargo 2000, the IATA special interest group of 26 airline and freight forwarders members implementing a new quality management system for the air cargo industry.

He was elected by Cargo 2000's newly appointed Board following its annual general meeting in Paris.

Cargo 2000, an IATA Interest Group, brings together major airlines and freight forwarders with the unique goal of implementing a new quality management system for the worldwide air cargo industry. Their objective is simple: to implement processes, backed by quality standards, that are measurable and supported by data, thereby improving the efficiency of air cargo, enhancing customer service levels and reducing operational costs.

Based on detailed customer research and with the assistance of leading IT companies, the group has re-engineered the transportation process from shipper to consignee through a "Master Operating Plan". This Master Operating Plan is at the heart of an industry-wide process control and reporting system which in turn drives the corrective action systems.

The key to the Master Operating Plan is the creation of a unique "route map" for individual shipments, which is then monitored and measured throughout the life of that shipment.

Implementation of the project is divided into three phases:

Phase 1

provides for post shipment audit of the airport-to-airport movement at a master air waybill level. Once a booking is made,a plan is automatically created with a series of checkpoints against which the movement is managed and measured. This enables the system to alert the Cargo 2000 member to any exceptions to the plan, allowing the relevant airline or forwarder to pro-ac tively respond to fulfill customer expectations.

Phase 2

provides for interactive monitoring of the door-to-door movement at a house waybill level, while

Phase 3

provides for real-time management of the transportation channel at individual piece level.

Cargo 2000's members are now progressing with the implementation of phase two, which addresses door-to-door deliveries at House waybill level.

Membership of the group is open to all airlines and freight forwarders who are able to meet the requirements for implementation of the system within the defined phases and timescales.

A one-year Associate Membership is also available for those who would like to evaluate their capability to become a full member with the assistance of the group's technical and auditing teams.

29/05/02 Hamburg Süd orders state-of-the-art Volumax 2.300 refrigerated containers

With an investment of more than US$ 40 million for 2,300 containers, Hamburg Süd has awarded its largest contract ever for state-of-the-art Volumax refrigerated containers. On order are 20 foot and 40 foot containers equipped with modern cooling units featuring highly efficient scroll compressors and using the environmentally friendly R134a refrigerant.

In extensive tests, units from different providers and employing different compressor technology were deployed. The decision in favour of the Volumax reefer containers fitted with scroll compressors is based on an exceptional cooling capacity, which has the ability to maintain loads at minus 25 degrees Celsius even in an ambient temperature of 50 degrees Celsius.

The refrigerated containers have optimized insulation and greater internal volume. A slim reefer unit was specially designed for the 20 foot container. By reducing installation depth to only 335 mm (13.2 inches) it was possible to increase the potential internal volume to 30 cubic metres for payload. Hamburg Süd will be the first customer to deploy this newly developed unit.

13/05/02 The Boeing Company and CargoLifter AG announced that they have signed a Letter of Intent (LOI) to explore potential business opportunities for the development and use of "Lighter-than-Air" (LTA) vehicles for commercial, military and homeland security applications.

CargoLifter AG, based in Berlin, is developing a 260-meter-long and 65-meter-wide airship for the transport of oversized and heavy goods weighing up to 160 metric tons - the CargoLifter CL 160. This "flying crane" will be able to carry out expensive heavy transports faster, more simply and more cost efficiently - without ever touching the ground and almost entirely independent from the local infrastructure. Already, before the CL 160 is completed, the logistics company's second product line will go on the market: the CL 75 AC transportation balloon, which has a diameter of 61 meters and is able to transport up to 75 tons.

The LOI provides the basis for a more detailed joint study of possible business opportunities beyond CargoLifter's current business focus on using LTA vehicles for transporting heavy and outsized cargoes. Such opportunities could include the development of a stratospheric airship for commercial and military applications. For all such applications LTA vehicles offer a number of potential performance and cost benefits over traditional aircraft. They are environmentally friendly and require only a small logistics infrastructure. They provide constant lift independent of air speed. Their lift capability increases exponentially with vehicle size. And their low air speeds allow for more simple and affordable structures.

"Because our initial discussions have revealed a number of potential synergies and business opportunities between our two companies, this LOI is the next logical step in defining these opportunities in more depth," said George Muellner, president of the Boeing Phantom Works R&D division: "Once completed, we will have a stronger basis to decide whether entering into a long-term collaborative arrangement is in our mutual interests."

Carl von Gablenz, CEO of CargoLifter AG added : "From the outset, part of CargoLifter's strategic plan has been to enter into a long-term partnership with a major global company whose mission, interests, and capabilities are in alignment with, and complementary to, those of CargoLifter. We are delighted to pursue these detailed studies with Boeing and look forward to discovering additional synergies and opportunities."

Currently, the CargoLifter company employs 498 people, about 283 of whom are working on airship development at the dock in Briesen-Brand, near Berlin in the state of Brandenburg.
